Salvage & Recovery

The difference between recreational boat towing and salvage has been a difficult subject for some. Any problem that may arise is usually centered round the difference in billing methods and costs.

Towing assistance provides help for breakdowns and light groundings. The far more extensive salvage operations are covered only by yacht insurance policies.

Boaters should consider themselves in a salvage situation if their vessel becomes hard grounded, stranded, beached, taking on water emergency that requires urgent pumping, leaking a product that calls for containment and clean up, capsized, or sunk. Salvage services implies that there was some degree of danger or some need of extraordinary assistance.

Towing

All boaters should review their marine insurance coverage with their agent. The best protection against a salvage invoice is adequate insurance. Boaters should make sure the policy provides for salvage up to the full value of the vessel, not a percentage of its value, and that there is no deductible for salvage costs. The BoatU.S. marine insurance program offers this level of service. A homeowners policy may not cover salvage.

In an emergency salvage operation, TowBoatU.S. Long Island Sound responders will, if physically possible, distinguish between simple towing/soft grounding and the much more serious salvage efforts when distress or danger exist.

Salvage

Our response vessels are equipped with damage control kit, and high capacity dewatering pumps. There is normally a second backup boat to the initial response vessel, with salvage gear and crew, ready to go if required. We pile on resources quickly in order to bring any serious situation to a speedy termination. We’ll deploy divers with recovery equipment, and provide heavy lifting apparatus when required. We respond to any type on water emergency.

Have proper insurance coverage if this happens to you.

We invoice the hull underwriter directly for salvage services. Normally, we utilize the BoatU.S. Standard Form Yacht Salvage Contract. Individual salvage operations are invoiced based upon the circumstances involved. For more information on hull insurance, access the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance page.
